ARTIST STATEMENT
Surface is a collaboration of three artists (Lalitha Bandaru, Lindsey Champlin, and Henry Cowdery) in which METHOD is transformed by a multilayered immersive structure inviting viewers to depart from the typical built environment and explore the luminous intricacies of a liminal, whimsical space.
A vivid pink glow emanates from the windows of the gallery charged by the shifting sun and ultraviolet light reflecting off the structure within the gallery. If one peers into a window, they’re met with an undulating surface interrupted by a single hole large enough for a person to fit through. Periodically a viewer's disembodied head appears, emerging through the hole and discovering their immersion in the saturated expanse.
Viewers who enter the gallery must crouch to get into some areas, however the vaulted surface allows for entry without having to bend. The structure spans the entire length and width of the gallery. The organic contours curve down to just beneath the windows. Supporting the surface is a series of intricate geometric wood trusses that run across the width of the room. Simple steel pillars hold the surface aloft. Pinhole perforations in the surface above the framework allow light to filter down into the space -- countering the weighty, trussed structure with impressions of lofty unconstrained light and color. These same pinholes create a translucent quality that allows the wooden framework to be viewed from above.
ARTIST BIOS
Lalitha Bandaru was born and brought up in India. She has a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Art, London, and a Bachelor’s degree from Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore.
Having received the Future Leader Scholarship and the Lasalle Merit Scholarship during her
study, she has participated in the 'Warp Artist Village 2015' in Belgium as part of the Triennale Brugge’15 and was also shortlisted for Clifford Chance Sculpture Prize for the year 2017, London. Her work has been showcased in several shows including the Singapore Art Walk in 2019.
Lalitha is interested in the intangible quality of change or ‘shift’ that occurs around us whether it be in the natural world or the one that we live in. Using sculpture, paint and imagery as tools, her work focuses extensively on capturing this change. Apart from having her own practice, she has taught painting at UW and continues to teach painting at Bellevue College (continued education). Lalithabandaru.com @lalithaartstudio
