ARTIST STATEMENT
“I'm sorry for your loss” is a grant-funded, time-based installation about coping with grief. In a plexiglass and steel tank measuring 18ft long, 8ft wide, 4ft high, and filled with dried leaves, robot vacuums meander sweeping the tank at alternating times. At the south end of the tank, a dedicated section contains bases where the robots empty their bins and recharge. By the end of the exhibition, little or no leaves will remain in the tank. Guests are invited to join the artist in scattering the leaf leftovers at a TBD location following the closing of the exhibit. Sign-up will be available in the gallery.
“I’ve been working in installation art for over a decade, though I’ve had a few hiatuses because of experiencing crippling grief myself. I realized I didn’t have the tools or rituals in place, or understand how to process grief. Through feeling my emotions and making art, I have made progress. This piece is a part of my personal journey with loss. By sharing this work with our community, it will challenge others to think about how they process grief, recognize the personal growth that takes place from loss and develop their own grief support practices.”
ARTIST BIO
Launa Changnon is an interdisciplinary artist specializing in sculptural installations and paintings. Her work is motivated by difficult emotions, relationships and humor. Using familiar objects and time-based elements these works challenge preconceptions, personal decisions, capitalism, abusive dynamics and how we behave during conflict. Carrying an emotional depth and a dollop of humor, the work transforms, establishing emotional connection, contemplation and discourse.
For Launa, the creative process is a key to the inner, psychological world—balancing on the border of the conscious and subconscious, and revolving around themes like how we relate to each other and to the world we live in. She is interested in exploring these ideas and others around destruction, impermanence, human behavior, and personal growth in her work.
Originally from the East coast, Launa has worked in the arts for 17 years, participated in gallery exhibitions, studied at the Academy of Fine Art and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia, and worked at the Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine. She received her Masters Degree in video art from Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland and has been working in video and installations since 2002.
Launa spends most of her time at her studio in Seattle, working jobs at Studio Chair or in her yard deconstructing the songs of birds.
