Abstract artist Megan Prince interweaves advocacy and the zero waste movement, exploring the nature of relationships between hope, love, fear, and what we value in the ever-changing world. Relationships compel Prince to create; relationships between people, to belongings, and to the earth. Using reclaimed materials in her sculptures as a micro look at what we consider cast-offs in society, serving as a vehicle to think about what we consider unusable or garbage. What items do we cast aside because it has a small hole; what people do we move away from because the conversation has gotten too hard or they are inconvenient? Prince takes each remnant and turns it into something new and special, giving it new value, a new life, and hope for the future. Donation is an equally important part of these works creating relationships, empowering people, and inviting participation in the conversation while pointing to environmental impact. We are all tied together by relationship.

Red Ratchet Strap Remnant Relationship (RRSRR) is the largest in Prince’s Remnant Relationships. A series of hand-woven wall sculptures made from leftover pieces of cast-off or remnant fiber materials which the artist gathers from her community at large. Her material choice speaks to accessibility and inclusion of all people and being a steward of our world. 12,000 feet of used red ratchet straps were donated by artist collective SuttonBeresCuller (SBC) and reclaimed to make the five sections of this multi-component soft sculpture. In making RRSRR Prince created five components which can be assembled and reassembled for each new installation, further investigating site-specificity and reuse. The first site-specific iteration of RRSRR was installed at KCLS Kirkland Library earlier this year, this is the second.
Impermanent, 2022, red Sharpie on photography seamless, 80x105 inches. Impermanent is the largest to date from Prince’s 1,000 Paintings of Love series, each unique piece points to the individuality and importance of each of us in this life. Also, a sort of blueprint for RRSRR, the artist created both works simultaneously, fluidly working back and forth between them. This large-work on paper is made with non-archival materials and will degrade with time from the acids in both the Sharpie marker and photography seamless paper. Used photography seamless paper donated by photographer John Keatley and reclaimed to make this work.
Leading the viewer toward introspection of human tendencies Prince’s art practice includes work on paper, soft sculpture, installation, performance, stop-motion video and most recently photography. Currently you can see further Remnant Relationships in the expansive soft sculpture survey Soft Touch at the Museum of Museums.
